How can these " Giants of the seas " be towed in case of damage, in all weather conditions, when they are loaded with cargo and fuel oil? The drill synthesis what is happening now off the coast of Britanny will tell us…consequences will be drawn…

At this time (March 1st 2016) a towing drill is carried out off the coast of Britanny with the tug ABEILLE BOURBON and the container ship EMMA MAERSK. This training is done in order to check if towing means are sufficient to keep at the required course these giants in case of damages. MOR GLAZ association thanks MAERSK company, as we did it the 9th March 2013 to the drill with MARCO POLO (CMA CGM); shipowners want to know what salvage means are.

MOR GLAZ association wishes to congratulate all persons involved in this drill and those who have contributed to this initiative. These kind of training are useful and should be done more often because world fleet has opted for giant ships.Money that was spent today to perform this drill is being used well and efficiently, as it's prevention… to check means, we should use them to draw some conclusions.

Giant ships are still a danger, States and worldwide shipowners should meet them and find together some solutions to face the danger associated with huge vessels at sea and at port.

In January 2007 the two most powerful tugs of Europe had been used to cope with accident of MSC located in the Channel carried only 2200 containers, some of which represented 1700 tons of dangerous cargo (known), 4000 m3 of heavy fuel oil for its propulsion and 142 m3 of diesel oil.

Even if this drill is already a succes by its implementation, salvage and operation means are not sufficent on the Atlantic coast.

In addition, if the EMMA MAERSK was In bad way... toward which shelter place then which harbour could be towed?

In the event of a loss of containers, what kind of means has the "prefet maritime" to pick up them?

Contrary to what you could heard, all floating things... Wood... Containers and others are dangerous for sailing, moreover sea is not a garbage.

This training, even if it's useful, don't stopped meetings of Mor Glaz association in order to obtain more means...many tugs more powerful, more modern to take action when it will be necessary.

Since 1978, prevention avoided more than 21 disasters similar to Amoco Cadiz
